Welcome to the Department of Kannada

Vision

  • Osmania University was established in 1917. At that time, Bidar, Kalaburagi and Raichur districts of Karnataka were under the rule of the Nizam. Therefore, Kannadigas were a minority in the Nizam's state. Since Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu speakers were citizens of his state, the Nizam king started the Kannada department from the intermediate level around 1918 with a vision that all the residents should study the literary cultures of their respective languages. It has further grown to the level of undergraduate, Postgraduate and research degree studies. Kannada language is one of the oldest languages that have attained classical status. There is a plan to undertake special studies on classical literature.
  • Hyderabad Since the people of Karnataka were under the rule of the Nizam, it was naturally the responsibility of the king to provide education to the citizens. Therefore, Kannada departments were opened in Koti Women's College and Nizam College and on the campus of Osmania University to provide higher education to Kannadigas. The Kannada department has been continuing that mission.
  • The Kannada department, which has a rich cultural heritage, offers opportunities for studying M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Kannada in universities of foreign states, especially in South India. It has the reputation of being the second oldest department in the country. Many distinguished personalities have served in this department. Many have achieved success through education. Kannada pride and research studies are given space..
  • Teaching of Kannada literature in Kannada Department, task pf carrying Kannada language – Culture to the next generation is undertaken. In that regard, there is an idea of forming projects.
  • The vision of the department is to prepare the students studied in this department as good citizens and equip them for national service.
