Welcome to the Department of Psychology

Department Profile

Psychology was first introduced as a subject in Osmania University in Bachelors programme (1950-51) followed by Masters (MA Programme) at the Department of Psychology in 1962 with Prof.E.G. Parameswaran as its first Head. Subsequently, MPhil and PhD courses were added and for about two decades, the emphasis was on Developmental Psychology, and then Counselling followed by Organizational Behaviour, that were offered as specializations from 1986. Two Job-oriented courses, PG Diploma in Child Psychology (1976) at the Constituent college- OUCW, Koti and PG Diploma in Counselling Psychology at Nizam College were started. In 2002, Psychology as an optional was introduced in the UG course (BA) at Prof. G. Ram Reddy Centre for Distance Education, Osmania University followed by PG Programme in Psychology in 2004. The resource materials were prepared by the faculty of the Department of Psychology. Since then, Department has been coordinating the conduct of contact classes (both theory and practical) followed by the practical examinations. Department had many stalwarts from its inception who served in various capacities; Prof. C. Ramchandra Reddy (OSD to VC), Prof. Parameswaran (Principal of Arts College, Management College and higher positions at Dept of Education), Prof. C. Beena (Registrar, O.U, Director-ICSSR-SRC), Prof. Uma Rangan (Vice Principal of Arts College), Prof. Sulochana Reddy (Principal, OUCW, Koti) and Prof. K. Ravi Chandra (Dean, Social Sciences; Director of ASC in addition to other posts within and outside the University).
Till date, the Department has offered close to 130 PhD's and 53 MPhil degrees; undertaken several research projects so far. Notable projects like Educational and Vocational Guidance and Training (EVGT) project (by Prof. N. Yadagiri Reddy); DRS-SAP followed by ASIHSS programme (steer headed by Prof.C.Ramchandra Reddy and Prof. K. Ravi Chandra) and other prominent projects were undertaken from BSNL, ISRO, India and SEDSU, European Union (headed by Prof. K. Ravi Chandra and Prof. C. Beena) in addition to projects from UGC. Major project SAKSHAM (2009-2014) under Global Fund, Geneva (GFATM-R7) was undertaken by Prof. Beena for 5 years that focused on counseling sub-component. Dr. A. Anupama served as the Zonal programme Manager for 3 years monitoring programme management for four states in South India. Dr.A.Anupama, Dr.P.Swathi, Dr.Cynthia G Douglas and Mr.A.H.S.Vithal have undertaken 4 Interdisciplinary projects (2019-20) in collaboration with Departments of Journalism, Linguistics and Sociology under RUSA 2.0. SAHAYAM, a counseling centre was set up from the department by Prof. C. Beena that extends services to the Campus students and staff. With her extraordinary services at prisons in the state of Telanaga she received the prestigious Ashoka award for "Unnati" in 2017 and has been a fellow since then. Three teachers received Best Teacher Awards for their impeccable services, Prof. E.G. Parameswaran, Prof. K. Ravi Chandra and Prof. C. Beena.
Faculty at the department has been actively involved in community outreach, trainings at various reputed institutions and centres, giving extension lectures, took part in preparing UG and PG materials for Telugu Academy, IGNOU and BRAOU, E-Learning content in various formats including the UG lessons for MOOC at EMRC, OU, and Commissionerate for Collegiate of Education. Currently, two permanent faculty members, Dr. P. Swathi (currently Head) and Dr. A. Anupama have been serving the department upholding the values and ethos laid by the stalwarts of the Department. They have been serving in positions like Head, Chairperson, BOS in Psychology, Chairperson, BOS in Rehabilitation Psychology. In addition, they held other administrative positions (Dr.Swathi as Joint Director of Centre for Women studies at O.U and Dr.Anupama as Vice-Principal, UCASS) and are currently extending services as Assistant Director of UGC-MMTTC, O.U & student advisor, UCASS (Dr.P.Swathi); Coordinator, RUSA 2.0 (Dr.Anupama, A). They are supported by two full-time faculty, Assistant professors(C), Dr. Cynthia G Douglas and Mr. A.H.S. Vithal and non-teaching staff Mr.H.Chandra Mohan, Dr.A.Anjaiah and Mr.M.A.Subhan.
