Department Profile
The University started the Diploma Course in German in 1954-55 with the help of part-time teachers. Starting to work as a full-fledged Department in 1958-59, the Department offered Junior and Senior Diploma in German. The Advanced Diploma Course in German was introduced in 1969. The Department also had a M.A. Programme in German that was introduced in 1969.
Since then the Department of German runs as a full-fledged Deparmtnet offering various Diploma Courses. Self-financing Cources and Intensive Courses in German have also been offered from time to time.
The Department since its inception has worked in close cooperation with the local German language Institute - The Max Muller Bhavan (which unfortunately closed down in 1996), Goethe Zentrum and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Also the embassies of Germany, Austria and Switzerland have been sending material in the form of newspapers, magazines, journals, books and brochures from time to time.
The Department also has a huge Library with a collection of over 2000 books, some of which are rare copies. The Library has been available for the students on all working days.
